153 Years of St. Pancras London, Autograph Collection.

Since first opening in 1873 as the Midland Grand Hotel, St. Pancras London – Autograph Collection, has stood as one of the capital’s most recognisable landmarks. Designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott, the building is positioned above St. Pancras Station, one of London’s great rail gateways. That sense of connection still defines the experience of staying here today. Now, 153 years later, it still welcomes guests arriving by train from across Britain and Europe.

Over the decades, the hotel has lived through many chapters. After closing in 1935 due to the operational demands of maintaining such a grand Victorian property, it survived wartime bombings and later faced the threat of demolition during the redevelopment plans of the 1960s. Thanks to the efforts of architectural campaigners, including Sir John Betjeman, the building was protected and later granted Grade I listed status, preserving one of London’s great architectural masterpieces for future generations. Following an extensive restoration project, the building named Barlow House after William Henry Barlow, the railway engineer who designed the station’s roof, was added. That same year in 2011, the hotel reopened its doors, returning the building to its original purpose after more than 75 years.

Most recently, in April 2026, the hotel completed a full renovation of its Barlow House. Ongoing evolution continues across the hotel today, with further renovations and enhancements taking place in the Chambers Suites, and in selected areas as part of our continued commitment to honour that heritage; Every detail is designed to respect the character of the building while embracing contemporary hospitality.

Directly above St. Pancras International and moments from King’s Cross, the hotel continues to connect London to Paris, Brussels and beyond, while sitting at the centre of one of the city’s most dynamic neighbourhoods.

As we celebrate 153 years of history, we remain proud to care for a landmark that has become part of London’s story. More importantly, we look ahead to continuing the tradition of St. Pancras London, that is personalising every stay with exceptional care for the next century and beyond.
