History of the spaceĀ
The Midland Grand employed a small army of staff to carry out basic functions in guest rooms such as stoking the fireplaces, fetching and removing water for washing, and emptying chamber pots. They were dedicated to the task of meeting their guests’ needs; if they failed there was always a queue of others eager to fill their shoes. The hotel needed many of them to remain on hand through the night, so there was accommodation for staff on the top floor, and this room, The Quarters, which was originally separated into four small sleeping compartments and heated by a single fireplace (66 sqm).
